Thermal Calculations/U-Value calculations
U-value calculations are often part of the SAP Calculation/SAP Ratings process. These are also known as Thermal Calculations. However, in some cases clients simply require U-value calculations to be undertaken for individual thermal elements. For example, Richmond Thermal Solutions will carry out individual U-value calculations for architects as part of their standard specification.
In the case of extensions and conversions, the thermal specification will comply every time if guidance within the Approved Document L1B is followed. It is worth noting that U-value calculations for elements regarding new dwellings often vary, and this is dependent on many factors such as the heating systems in use. (Please see the DER/TER calculations page for more information).
Approved Document L1A gives guidance on new dwellings. If you require thermal calculations for Conversions – Material Change of Use or House extensions-excess glazing calculations please click on the relevant link.
It is often the case that a client wants to know existing U-values for thermal elements in their property, as a starting point for upgrading works. Upgrading work also falls under the guidance in Approved Document L1B.
Visit our Property Renovations page to find information about working on existing properties. On such properties, all thermal elements from walls, floors and roofs may require a Building Regulations Application. Even minor works such as replacing defective plasterwork may require an application. This may involve having to upgrade the thermal performance of the wall: For example, having to timber frame, or dot-and-dab insulated plasterboard to the wall, which can affect the usable floor area. Having thermal calculations undertaken for work can justify not having to upgrade thermal elements.
